Shortstop Darby Walker named Co-Freshman of the Year by the LSC

CANYON, Texas - Five Buffalo baseball players honored Lone Star Conference announces 2008 postseason awards. Shortstop Darby Walker was recognized as the Co-Freshman of the Year along with senior Brian Schupp garnering second team All-LSC honors as a utility player. On the academic list, sophomore hurler Billy Zeleznak garnered All-Academic accolades, while seniors Justin Graham and Kent Wright also were honored with spots on the Commissioner's Honor Roll for their efforts in the classroom.

Walker, an Irving, Texas, native was an offensive force for the Buffs this season, hitting .346 on the year with 13 doubles and 42 RBI from his leadoff position. While starting all 52 games for WT, Walker lead the team in walks with 33 and stolen bases with 11.

Schupp, a 5 foot 10 second basemen from Prosper, Texas, hit .385 with 19 home runs and a team-high 63 RBI. Schupp put his mark on the WT record books this season, his 19 homers ties him for first all time for dingers in a season.

Graham, a native of Grapevine, Texas, was the team leader in triples (2), hitting .289 on the year with three home runs. With his .332 on-base percentage, Graham was the fire starter for WTAMU offense. He appeared in 52 games, holding a .950 fielding percentage while roaming center field for the Buffs.

While splitting his time this season between working behind the plate and at designated hitter, Wright started 29 games for the Buffs, hitting .269 on the year with eight RBI. Wright is a wildlife biology major with a minor in agriculture.

In his second season in Canyon, Zeleznak recorded 69 innings during 14 appearances this season for the Buffs, tallying three wins and striking out 45 opposing hitters. Zeleznak lead WT this season in wins and was third in ERA. The Grapevine, Texas native is a pre-med major.
