White Dominates during Maroon & White Spring Game

April 5, 2008

CANYON, Texas - Led by a impressive defensive performance, the White Team and guest head coach State Representative Warren Chisum defeated the Maroon Team, led by guest head coach State Representative David Swinford, 31-6, on a sunny day at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.

"The biggest thing that I'm happy about today is that we got through this game and this spring with no injuries," said head coach Don Carthel. "Our defensive line, especially our Mississippi kids, looked really good today. We also had a chance to see a lot of what our younger kids can do on the field since we rested a lot of our seniors."

Highlighting the effort were defensive linemen Eugene Sims, who collected four sacks in the scrimmage, and Marcus Rowe who was a force in the center of the line of scrimmage.

Jordan Smith returned an interception 68 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, as did Derrick People, who also returned an pick for a score.

Offensively, Keithon Flemming racked up over 100 yards of total offense was solid carrying the ball and catching it out of the back field. The sophomore appeared at running back, quarterback and on defense during the game.

The Buffs will open the 2008 season in search of their fourth straight Lone Star Conference Championship and NCAA-II playoff appearance on Aug. 30 when they travel to Grand Junction, Colo., to battle Mesa State.
