Carthel Named AFCA Region Four Coach of the Year
Dec. 4, 2007
CANYON, Texas -
Three years ago, Don Carthel awoke the slumbering giant that was West Texas A&M football program and after earning a third straight Lone Star Conference title and recording only the second undefeated regular season in school history, Carthel has been selected as the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Region Four Coach of the year. "What makes this award so special is that this is the only coach of the year award voted on exclusively by the coaches themselves," AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff said. "The winners are selected by the coaches they compete with and against on a daily basis." The AFCA recognizes five regional Coach of the Year winners in each of the Association's five divisions: Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III and NAIA. The winners are selected by Active members of the Association who vote for coaches in their respective regions and divisions. In three seasons at the helm of the Buffalo football program, Carthel has compiled an overall record of 33-5 (.868) and help the team make the first three playoff appearances in school history after capturing each of the last three Lone Star Conference Championships. This season, the Buffs broke at least 20 team and individual school records as they sweep through the regular season with a perfect 11-0 slate, which saw them post four nationally ranked opponents. Carthel and WT went on to defeat No. 25 Washburn in the postseason's first round to notch only the second playoff victory in school history. 2007 AFCA Regional Coach of the Year Winners Football Bowl Subdivision Region 1: Jeff Jagodzinski, Boston College; Rich Rodriguez, West Virginia (tie) Region 2: Sylvester Croom, Mississippi State Region 3: Ron Zook, Illinois Region 4: Mark Mangino, Kansas Region 5: Troy Calhoun, U.S. Air Force Academy Football Championship Subdivision Region 1: Dave Clawson, Richmond; Tom Masella, Fordham (tie) Region 2: Al Lavan, Delaware State Region 3: Danny Hope, Eastern Kentucky Region 4: Mark Farley, Northern Iowa Region 5: John Stiegelmeier, South Dakota State Division II Region 1: John Luckhardt, California (Pennsylvania) Region 2: Chip Hester, Catawba College Region 3: Chuck Martin, Grand Valley State Region 4: Don Carthel, West Texas A&M Region 5: Pat Behrns, Nebraska-Omaha; Bill O'Boyle, Chadron State (tie) Division III Region 1: Bob Ritter, Middlebury Region 2: Mike Donnelly, Muhlenberg Region 3: Pete Fredenburg, Mary Hardin-Baylor Region 4: Larry Kehres, Mount Union Region 5: Jeff McMartin, Central College (Iowa) NAIA Region 1: Dino Kaklis, Bethel College (Tenn.)
