EDMOND, Okla. - Redshirt freshman Adriana Cavazos made two vital saves during the penalty kick shootout as the West Texas A&M women's soccer team beat Angelo State, 3-2, in the Lone Star Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon. The score remained knotted at two goals apiece after two overtime periods, forcing a shootout; sophomore Brianna McMillian scored the game-winning penalty kick to lift the Lady Buffs to victory.

The Rambelles scored first in the match when Christian Willman sent a corner kick into the box and Jennifer Bukowski found the back of the net to put ASU up, 1-0.

In the 21st minute, WT benefited from an own goal that equalized the match at one goal apiece. Sophomore Miriam Dominguez put the Lady Buffs ahead, 2-1, in the second half when she scored on a breakaway created by a pass from McMillian.

ASU fought back and tied the game in the 77th minute when Kristen Boister crossed the ball and Jody DeWolf scored on an open net.

Despite out-shooting ASU by a 22-11 margin, the Lady Buffs were unable to score and the match remained tied through both overtime periods to force penalty kicks.

Head coach Butch Lauffer subbed in Cavazos for the shootout, and it proved to be the game-winning decision as the Amarillo, Texas, native came up with two big stops.

Sophomore Eti Sages scored the first PK, followed by a score by ASU's Willman. Dominguez connected next for WT as Cavazos made her first stop of the shootout by knocking away Rambelle Ashley Tatum's shot, giving the Lady Buffs a 2-1 advantage.

ASU goalkeeper Becky Martin came up big for the Rambelles as she saved sophomore Kayla Sisco's shot. Kristy Knaub scored next for Angelo State, followed by a Lady Buff score from junior Megan Szydloski. Brittany Tollison scored on her PK to keep the match tied, but McMillian scored on the final penalty kick for WT.

In a do-or-die situation, Cavazos denied ASU's final PK by Lucy Thompson to give West Texas A&M the win.

WTAMU will face No. 2 Midwestern State tomorrow at Noon in the next round of the tournament. MSU won a close 3-2 match against the Lady Buffs in WT's last game of the season on Oct. 26.
